IDFC First Bank has introduced a new service that allows its NRI customers to use UPI directly from their international mobile numbers — no need for an Indian SIM anymore. This update rolled out on June 25, 2025, and is a major step toward making digital payments seamless for Indians living outside the country.
IDFC First Bank Launches UPI for NRIs
Until now, UPI services in India required a valid Indian mobile number linked to your bank account. That meant NRIs often had to maintain a separate Indian SIM card just to use UPI apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, or Paytm — which wasn’t always practical.
With this new update, IDFC First Bank NRE and NRO account holders can now link their foreign mobile number to UPI and start transacting just like residents in India.
This shift reflects a growing effort to make India’s digital banking infrastructure more accessible to its global diaspora — and more in tune with how NRIs actually live and bank.
Eligible Countries for the New UPI Service
This feature isn’t global just yet, but it does cover a solid list of 12 countries where a large number of NRIs live and work. If you’re a customer of IDFC First Bank and reside in one of the following countries, you’re eligible:

This means if you’re holding a foreign number registered in any of these countries, you can link it to your IDFC First Bank account and activate UPI with it — no need to insert an Indian SIM or use roaming services.
